Cyanogen Inc updates OnePlus One to 12.1.1 with Microsoft Cortana

Cyanogen Inc is finally rolling out Cyanogen OS 12.1.1 for the OnePlus One, but it is not just an update. Noooooo. This is the first OS version where you get built-in Microsoft Cortana support. The sad part is that this feature will only be allowed in the US for now.

Cyanogen Cortana

Microsoft released Cortana a little while ago to some smartphones and, shortly after, it removed “the always listening” feature. On OnePlus One, things will be different because the VI will be pretty much embedded everywhere. The app on the OnePlus One will present the “Hey Cortana” hotword along with support for quiet mode, alarms and voice activated setting toggles. Cyanogen Inc. mentions that embedding Cortana into the OS will only allow the software to develop more in the future.

If you have a OnePlus One device, you should see the update in the system menu. Keep in mind that this is a Lollipop-based update as the “12” in the version number indicates. Cortana support will be limited to US users for now. If Cortana is not to your liking, you can always uninstall it after you update.

Cyanogen Inc. still in good partnership with YU, despite rumors

Cyanogen Inc. decided to split from OnePlus last year but they didn’t remain stranded as they continued to strive for an exclusive partnership with Micromax under the YU brand popular in India. Since then, YU has launched some pretty popular devices running on Cyanogen OS, but the latest Yuphoria phone does not run on this OS. Cyanogen says everything is peachy despite this fact.

YUphoria with Cyanogen Inc.

The phone in question is Yuphoria, and it was launched earlier this year initially running on Cyanogen OS. It is basically a mid-range device with a price-tag of around $100. This model is no longer available, though, as the new model – YU5010A – is running on Android 5.1.1 stock and it costs a little less.

There is a statement coming from Cyanogen officials where they assure their customers that the partnership with YU is not in danger. Moreover, the newest OS version, 12.1, will power the newest Yutopia device. In addition, the Yureka Plus and the Yureka will get updated to 12.1 as well.

Yutopia will be the first flagship-level device that Cyanogen Inc. will power in terms of operating system, it appears. YU didn’t make any comment, but the decision of launching a device running on a competing OS is strange, even if Cyanogen assures everyone that there are one-off models that they will not support.

Cyanogen Inc seals the deal with Playphone in including the app and game distributor in Cyanogen OS

Cyanogen Inc is on a roll when it comes to partners these days as it has just allied itself with Playphone in an attempt to bring the latter’s social game store to Cyanogen OS. It is unclear at this moment whether the store will be bundled with the OS phones. But this will happen soon.

Cyanogen Playphone

The Playphone game store can be installed on most devices if you go to the official website to do so, you won’t be able to go to Google Play to get it. You get lots of free-to-play games, but you also get a paid-app section where you can find games and apps like Final Fantasy III, Tetris and NBA Jam.

The store has been targeting smaller markets, which makes us think it will not push to be presented in Cyanogen OS phones selling on the US market for example.

Cyanogen Inc. announces successful $80 million funding goal reached

Cyanogen Inc. is on a roll as they just secured $80 million in a new round of funding. When 2015 started, there was rumor of Microsoft investing a rather large sum of money in CyanogenMod’s commercial branch, but recently we found out that the tech giant gave that up in order to consider other investment options.

Cyanogen

This new funding session will lead to hiring more people and subsequently speed up the development process of its operating system.

Cyanogen Inc. got money from some pretty known names such as Qualcomm Inc or Twitter Ventures, Ruper Murdoch, Telefonica Ventures, Vivi Nevo, Smartfren Telecom, index Ventures, and Access Industries. Its existing venture partners are Redpoint Ventures, Benchmark, Tencent Holdings LTD. and Andreessen Horowitz.

Microsoft and Cyanogen could still be working on a future partnership as the latter announced that some partners will be announced later on. Moreover, the speculated partnership would include Microsoft devices used on CyanogenMod devices.

OnePlus One to get Cyanogen 12S update in mid March

OnePlus One will be getting an OS update as soon as March, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei mentioned in a Twitter message today. The company’s first and only phone is getting an update to CyanogenMod 12S in late March, about the same time OxygenOS will be making its appearance.

CM Tweet

Pei also noted that the 90-day deadline set to bring the phone to Android 5.0 failed because of some “proprietary drivers, QA, codes and certifications”.

OnePlus had a nasty divorce from Cyanogen Inc., meaning that an update could have been dead from the get-go. We’re not sure if there will be a CM13S update for the One but it is possible that OxygenOS will take over and it could become OPO’s future.

Microsoft said to invest in Cyanogen Inc.

Microsoft is not counting only on its (not)Windows Phones but has also decided to invest in Cyanogen Inc. At the moment, Microsoft is a minority investor in the company that was created around a custom ROM in 2013 as $70 million was accumulated for the startup so far. Investors are evaluating the company at millions of dollars at the moment, which means Cyanogen Inc. can only grow from here.

Microsoft is still hoping you will pick a Windows Phone over Apple and Android choices, but they know their chances are slim. It appears that they would like to change the game a bit even if it means investing in a custom ROM.

The most important thing is that Microsoft is invested in this project at all, considering they usually finance projects that may or may not be successes on the long run.
