MediaTek announces new processor aimed at smart wearable market

MediaTek just announced a new processor aimed specifically at the wearable market. When most wearables and smart watch manufacturers choose to use re-purposed older processors like Snapdragon 400, someone decided it’s high time that hardware components made specifically for smaller gadgets are a must.     MT2523 is a complete system-in-package for wearables that take usage of GPS, dual-mode Bluetooth LE, efficient Cortex M4 CPU and support for high-resolution screens. This system in a package is supposedly efficient, with a 41% smaller PCB area than previous models. It is estimated that devices powered by this chip would last for a whole week on one charge. It has a built-in GPS that should help a wearable in being more fitness-oriented. The fitness tracker world could be the best niche for the MT2523.   Most smart watches running on Android Wear have been built around a Cortex-A7 CPU core, which is more powerful than the M4 core in MT2523. If this is true, this chip will most likely power modestly-packed wearables and fitness trackers. MediaTek says that its newest chip will be available for usage in the first quarter of 2016, so you should expect to see it in devices later this year.   Source: MediaTek via Android Police  

Qualcomm rebrands Snapdragon 618 and 620 to make them more appealing

Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 and 620 have been re-branded by the OEM just to become relevant again. There comes a time when your former flagship systems on a chip become irrelevant in the world of premium phones and what can you do to make them relevant again? You re-brand them and re-purpose them for the mid-range section of the niche market! The same happens with less-used mid-range SoCs as well.       Qualcomm decided to re-position its Snapdragon 618 and Snapdragon 620 into Snapdragon 650 and Snapdragon 652. This change was made in order to reflect the advanced performance that these two processors are capable of. Some of the most important features that these two chips support – better than other 600 series chips – are:   4K Ultra HD video recording high-resolution still photography advanced 4G LTE capabilities.   In order to reflect these possibilities, Qualcomm put its old flagship processors higher in the 600 tier.   “We’ve been developing the Snapdragon 652 and Snapdragon 650 processors over the past 12 months, and the superior capabilities and performance positions them well above other processors in this tier.” Most people will not even note the difference and may consider that Snapdragon 652 and 650 are new entries, but in reality they are the same processors launched in February.   Source: Droid Life  

Exynos 8 Octa 8890 announced by Samsung today!

Just like its Qualcomm brethren, Samsung decided to announce its newest SoC today. This piece of hardware from the Exynos family named Exynos 8 Octa 8890 is built on the latest 14nm technology, just like the Exynos 7 Octa chips launched earlier this year and the Snapdragon 820 launched yesterday by the competition.       This SoC represents the first Samsung custom-designed CPU core based on 64-bit architecture and what it does is couple 4 big cores with 4 small ARM Cortex A53 cores to build up to the 8 core system.   Samsung says that this new technology will give smartphones and tablets 30 percent improvements in performance when compared to Exynos 7 Octa and 10 percent more power efficiency. This new SoC integrates a brand new LTE modem that will enable 6000 Mbps download speeds and 150 Mbps upload speeds on Cat 12 and 13.       Exynos 8 Octa 8890 supports display resolutions up to 4K UHD (4096×2160) and WQUXGA (3840×2400). The pixel density wars will never be over if technology keeps advancing this fast. The chip will get into the mass production stage later this year and it will surely make an appearance in Samsung’s next Galaxy S flagship that launches in 2016.   Source: Samsung via AndroidPolice

Snapdragon 820 revealed – meet next year’s flagship processor

Today, Qualcomm revealed its most recent system on chip that will probably power some of next year’s flagships, Snapdragon 820. With it, Qualcomm announced its desire to create a technology “designed around enriching visual quality and audio clarity.” This basically means that the new chip has a much improved GPU and better image processing, plus better audio. The improvements should help a smartphone with with faster upload/download speeds, much improved performance and faster quick charging.       The most important new features for Snapdragon 820:   Kyro CPU and Hexagon 680 DSP: up to 2.2 GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU that provides twice the performance of a Snapdragon 810 CPU, improvements in battery life and ultra-low power advanced imaging Adreno 530 GPU: 40% overall improvements over Adreno 430 GPU (better graphic performance, better computer capabilities and efficacious power usage X12 LTE Modem: 3x faster peak upload speeds and 33% faster peak download speeds when compared to X10 LTE modem from previous SoCs. (LTE 12 provides 600 Mbps download speeds) Quick Charge 3.0: 38% more efficient than Quick Charge 2.0 (four times faster than usual charging) Advanced WiFi: supports 802.11ad and 802.11ac 2×2-MU-MINO WiFi (at least twice faster than 802.11ac WiFi) Spectra camera ISP: supports capture of up to 28MP, hybrid autofocus, 14-bit image sensors and multi-sensor fusion algorithms.   Snapdragon 820 will not be available for smartphones immediately though, as we can only expect the hardware to power phones starting next year.   Source: Qualcomm

Snapdragon 820 details leaked – the New Qualcomm SoC could change the game

Snapdragon 820 was recently leaked and its specs seem to wash away some of that shame Qualcomm has been enduring since the beginning of 2015. If you are a casual fan of Android you must have at least heard of the heating issues surrounding Snapdragon 810 at the beginning of this year and at Samsung Galaxy S6’s launch. The newest SoC (MSM 8996) could put Qualcomm back in league with the good guys.       Snapdragon 820 will be the first to use Qualcomm’s newest ARM core called Hydra. The leaks seen so far mention that the SoC will have a 35% increase in performance compared to the Cortex-A57 ARM reference core, even if it will be a quad-core chip and not a hyped octa-core.       When it comes to the GPU support, the Qualcomm 820 Soc uses an Adreno 530 which assures future users of 40% improvement in performance with a 30% efficiency boost. It will also be based on 14nm architecture, which is an improvement from the 20nm Snapdragon 810 used. This should help the SoC keep a lower heat at higher clock speeds.       The SoC will support cameras up to 28MP with low-level sensors and programmable DSP, and LPDDR4 memory. Dell Venue 8 7000 confirmed by Dell and Intel – the world’s new thinnest tablet

Dell Venue 8 7000 series will be one of the first Android-running tablets from Dell and it appears the device will launch sometime soon (The Verge says it will arrive in time for the holidays). Venue 7000 has a rather vintage look with a slim body at its 6mm of thickness and it seems to surpass Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact’s most slim tablet in the world. Venue 8 has little to no bezels with its speakers positioned at the topside near the front-facing camera.  The Dell tablet will be the first such device to sport Intel’s Real Sense depth-mapping tech. the feature uses three cameras on the back of the tablet which allow for post-capture refocusing and other options (space measurements, selective color exclusion based on distance). Venue 8 has a light aluminum body with an OLED 8.4” display running at 2560 x 1600p Quad HD that allows the user to see beautiful and sharp images.
