Sony Xperia Z4 launched in Japan – meet Sony’s new waterproof flagship

Sony Xperia Z4 was finally announced by officials today. Sony’s 2015 flagship uses the same design as past Xperia devices which can be a good or a bad thing, depending on how you view things.

The phone retains its squarish shape with a glass back and metal frame and among the design differences you can spot from a distance are the speakers moved to the top and bottom bezels and the mash-up of the nanoSIM and microSD slots. The microUSB port is situated at the bottom of the device and doesn’t have a cap which makes charging the device easier while at the same time maintaining the waterproof function of the device.

Sony Xperia Z4 has a 5.2” 1080 x 1920p Triluminous panel, it weighs 144g and is 6.9mm thin, making it just a little thinner than the Z3. This change leads to a change in battery power as the main power cell is lowered from 3100 to 2930 mAh.

Under the chassis you will find 3 GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 64-bit octa-core 810 processor plus 32GB of storage. The main camera has a 20.7MB camera with a 1/ 2.3” sensor that allows filming 4K videos. The front camera has a 5MP sensor with digital stabilization and wide-angle.

Among the connectivity options you will find Wi Fi a/b/g/n/ac, HSDPA, Bluetooth 4.1, MHL and NFC with LTE Cat 6.0 radio.

Xperia Z4 runs on Lollipop 5.0 with Sony’s own skin on top of it all. An interesting detail is the “cooking mode” for Instagram which would make your culinary photos that much fresher and three-dimensional. You also get a funny face-detection mode where you get randomly selected animal faces superposed on people’s mugs on photos.

Sony Xperia Z4 will be available on Japanese markets starting this summer in colors like white, copper, black and aqua green. It will also get accessories such as a desktop stand and charger and a case with a square window. There is no news regarding its price and global availability as of yet, but expect prices similar or higher than those of Xperia Z3 and a release around Q3 2015.

Sony announced the low-end Xperia E4, a MediaTek device with a dual-SIM counterpart

Sony recently announced the low-end device Xperia E4, the device that is breaking usual design patterns. This device is changing Sony’s usual strong angles and monochrome “dress code” with a curvier plastic body. The color palette is somewhat changed as well, with the white version having a white housing and black bezel screen.

Sony to fire 1000 people by March 2016

Sony will be firing 1000 people by March2016 and they will all be laid off from the smartphone department. Sony has been making it their priority to launch one flagship every 6-8 months or so, but that entire process is costly and it requires sacrifices.

After it already cut 1000 workers in October, Sony is expected to announce a new round of cutbacks comprising 1000 people in the smartphone division by March next year.

The cuts will be made in the Chinese and European operations with few other regions being targeted. The two cuts combined will comprise 30% in reduction in the size of the smartphone group.

Sony is starting to go through a rough patch as the markets where it was leader these past few years are showing competition from Chinese OEMs. The US market is not the coziest place for Sony’s smartphones eitherat the moment.

Sony Xperia Z4 rumors: 4K screen with 6 GB of RAM

Sony Xperia Z4 tablet will be coming to stores next year and the first details have been already spilled! At least in rumor form. It appears that next year’s Sony device will be having an ultra HD screen at 13 inches and some large stacks of RAM to go with it. Let’s say it’s an affordable  mini-laptop with a touchscreen.

There’s just one piece of evidence so far – that can be fabricated altogether from what we know – that we will show you later and it appears that the 13-inch screen will sport a 16:10 ratio with Sony Xperia Z4, that is twice the amount or memory any tablet on the market has at the moment. These specs will be accompanied by a Qualcomm  Snapdragon 810 running at 2.86 GHz, which it totally needs considering the 8.2 million pixels the large screen has to work with.

The provided storage space is around 64 GB and all of the things are powered by a 12,100 mAh battery.

It appears that not everyone believes the rumors and, for most, this hardware spec is a dream come true and not a realistic step towards tech progression.

You should take this news with a grain of salt as, considering the fact that the tablet is rumored to make an appearance as soon as January 2015, it is probably a spoiler for a Sony tablet that will launch in the second half of 2015.

4K display is being worked on for smartphones and tablets alike, but there is still a long way to go until it becomes a regular feature on our handsets. The possibility of Sony throwing out such a powerful tablet in this short period of time is quasi-unbelievable, as such perfection is very difficult to attain.

The entire rumor can be a great prank because similar news regarding Sony Xperia Z3 was rumored to come out with a 4K display as well, but that never happened. The news was released by the Chinese site Padnews and it was taken by most tech portals around the world, along with the official looking specs of the Xperia Z4.

Sony shows AOSP builds for Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3

Sony is working on releasing some functional versions of Android Lollipop based on open-source code. They’ve managed to complete some AOSP builds for its flagships, including Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3.

The builds are not destined to end users, because they do not include reliability or functionality. Moreover, they do not include standard apps or even Google Play Store, which most people believe are stock Android features. The builds are made public mainly as a starting point for custom ROMs at the moment.

Sony has become more open minded towards bootloaders and mods, which means Sony products will be easier to use in the aftermarket development stage than other devices.

The updated binaries for the Xperia devices were not posted yet, which means users will not be able to compile versions of AOKP running on Z1, Z2 or Z3. They will be posted soon enough, as Sony officially posted, even if Sony is not going that far as to release customer-ready stock Android builds just yet.
