Big Android Wear update to roll out to all devices soon

Android Wear devices are getting a big update this month. Google will soon begin a big roll out with some major new features users may find interesting. One of the most important updates is the ability to take and make calls directly on the watch ( you would, of course, need a watch with a speaker to do this). Only two smartwatches have a speaker at the moment, namely Asus ZenWatch 2 (49mm) and the Huawei Watch.       The Android Wear update also brings better support for controlling your watch with gestures, even if some may need to be decoded to work, and the ability to dictate messages that you can then send from apps like WhatsApp and Hangouts.   Google mentioned that the update will start rolling out on existing Android smartwatches in the next couple of weeks. This important update that adds message dictation can make this type of wearable more important and useful than before while adding an innovative idea such as using a wearable device with additional gestures.   Google has not made any important changes since it launched the Android Wear platform, but the resulting wearables offer users more stylistic diversity when compared to the offerings of Samsung, Pebble or Apple, for example.   Source: Google via The Verge

MediaTek announces new processor aimed at smart wearable market

MediaTek just announced a new processor aimed specifically at the wearable market. When most wearables and smart watch manufacturers choose to use re-purposed older processors like Snapdragon 400, someone decided it’s high time that hardware components made specifically for smaller gadgets are a must.     MT2523 is a complete system-in-package for wearables that take usage of GPS, dual-mode Bluetooth LE, efficient Cortex M4 CPU and support for high-resolution screens. This system in a package is supposedly efficient, with a 41% smaller PCB area than previous models. It is estimated that devices powered by this chip would last for a whole week on one charge. It has a built-in GPS that should help a wearable in being more fitness-oriented. The fitness tracker world could be the best niche for the MT2523.   Most smart watches running on Android Wear have been built around a Cortex-A7 CPU core, which is more powerful than the M4 core in MT2523. If this is true, this chip will most likely power modestly-packed wearables and fitness trackers. MediaTek says that its newest chip will be available for usage in the first quarter of 2016, so you should expect to see it in devices later this year.   Source: MediaTek via Android Police

Google Glass for enterprise passes FCC regulations – could it start selling again soon?

Google Glass is not history yet as it seems that the company still wants to shove the tech up someone’s throat. A Glass model just passed FCC and it seems that the US will have another eye-computer to buy in the near future. At least the enterprise part of the US!       In order to sell a Google Glass in the US – with WiFi and Bluetooth radio – one would indeed need FCC permissions. Regulations have to be passed in order for the device to sell, which makes counting and measuring important too. Rumors regarding this upcoming Glass Enterprise talk about 5GHz WiFi capacity, better battery life and more improvements. But there are no official news from Google yet. An FCC approved device means that one available to the targeted public is not that far from completion though.   But the news regarding a new Google Glass were not received with as much enthusiasm as previous related bits of information. It seems that the Glass hype has simmered down by now – considering it was announced in 2012, when it broke the I/O convention. Could this movement to a business and enterprise niche be the place that Google Glass will sell best? We will have to wait and see!   Source: Droid Life

Samsung Gear S2 teaser officially released – expect official launch at IFA Berlin

Samsung Gear S2 is finally shown to us in all of its teaser splendor as Samsung releases the teaser video from the Unpacked event. The smartwatch will be officially unveiled at the IFA in Berlin in a couple of weeks, but now we can see for ourselves just what the teaser was all about.       The video of this Samsung Gear S2 device shows its most preeminent features such as the user interface. We can also see some shots of the watch faces, weather apps and maps and the stopwatch UI. Since it does not all look like stock Android Wear, we can safely assume that the device will have some form of custom Samsung software like Tizen. The device also hints at a built-in heart rate monitor.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwn8qMaNoJk     The Gear S2 will have apps positioned in a ring of thumbnails and we will also have a rotating bezel. The UI itself seems to be built around the navigational ring. This could very well be one of the contenders for Apple’s smartwatch.   The video shows a Samsung Gear S2 with a possibly metallic body and a Super AMOLED panel. Under the chassis you should find something like a 1.2 GHz Samsung Exynos 3472 chipset with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The device should support Wi-Fi, call support and 3G.   The Gear S2 will be officially released on September 3rd, in Berlin. That’s about all we know about it so far, folks!   Source: Youtube
