UK HTC One M8 and M9 get update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow

HTC One M8 and M9 from the UK are getting an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. HTC has promised fast updates for its devices, but the action is not as easy to do as the announcement. Every country has to wait its turn because these things take time. Now it is time for the UK HTC One M8 to get its update.

The announcement came on Twitter from the HTC UK account and it appears that, in the next 48 hours, all One M8 devices from the country will be updated. The One M9 will be updated soon after too. This makes last year’s flagship the first to receive an update to Android’s most recent OS, ahead of this year’s one. Get ready to hit that Update Now button, folks!

[CES 2016] Huawei Mate 8 made official – the first 2016 flagship is here, just not in the US

Huawei Mate 8 is official! The newest 2016 flagship is here and it was launched earlier at CES. It will probably not be available in the US, but that didn’t stop the OEM from showing it at the event in Los Angeles. It will launch in some countries starting today, and prices vary by regions. The device has a starting price of €599 (the 32GB model) but it can cost up to €699 (the 64GB model).

Huawei Mate 8

Official specs for Huawei Mate 8:

  • Display: 6.0 inch LCD, 1920 x 1080, 368 PPI
  • Operating System: Android 6.0 + EMUI 4.0
  • Processor: 2.3GHz Kirin 950; Octa-core, 16nm
  • Memory: 32GB ROM/3GB RAM  or  64GB ROM/4GB RAM; microSD expandable up to 128GB
  • Camera: 16MP OIS, F2.0, BSI CMOS, dual-tone flash, Front: 8MP, F2.4
  • Battery: 4000mAh
  • Dimensions: 157.1 mm × 80.6 mm × 7.9 mm; 185g

  • Sensors: Gravity, Light, Proximity, Fingerprint, Hall, Gyroscope, Barometer, Compass

The new device has Huawei’s newest octa-core Kirin 950 SoC accompanied by 3 or 4 GB of RAM, depending on the model you choose. Both the 32GB and 64GB storage models have a huge 4000 mAh battery which should last you for two full days of usage in one charge.

Huawei Mate 8 also has a fingerprint sensor which is sold as an improvement over the previous phones. The unlock speed is 100% faster and you also get features like app or document lock and quick camera access shortcuts.

Huawei’s flagship will run on Android 6.0 and it will have a Huawei EMUI skin on top. The strange skin goes farther away from Android OS with its lack of app drawer and weird iOS styling. There is no plan on releasing the device to the US market at the moment, so possible customers here don’t have anything to worry about, unless they do buy one via eBay or the such.

Sprint’s LG G Stylo gets Android 6.0 Marshmallow OTA

Sprint’s LG G Stylo is getting an update to android Marshmallow. The device got to Sprint in June and it didn’t make that much of a fuss then because it is basically a generic big-screen low-price device with a built-in stylus. The device may not be on your most important devices to update by the end of the year, but here we are.

LG G Stylo

Sprint officially announced Android 6.0 for LG G Stylo, and it should be rolling out to all devices starting today. It may take a week to get to ALL devices in the US, but it is happening. This is the third official update for the device, which seems to be easy to update or popular among Android devs!

The T Mobile G Stylo version did not receive its Marshmallow flavor yet, but we hope it will happen soon.

Samsung Galaxy S5 (klte) gets CyanogenMod 13 nightly support

Do you have a Samsung Galaxy S5 but you don’t love your already outdated OS with TouchWiz skins on top? Maybe you will like the CyanogenMod 13 update better, because the CyanogenMod team has been working on an Android Marshmallow functioning ROM version and a nightly is finally out the door.

Samsung Galaxy S5

Since the previous update that Galaxy S5 (klte) got was in October and it was comprised of Android 5.1.1, owners are still going to have to wait for a while before getting the official Marshmallow bit. Of course, when the change gets there, it will have a TouchWiz skin on top and not everyone likes that.

Flashing custom ROMs is still an option and here enters CyanogenMod with the 13 nightly based on Android 6.0. The full download of this file zip comes to 286MB, and you will need the GApps suite to make Google-ly things work.

Of course, you must not forget this is a nightly build, which means it can be packed with bugs and things that will not work as intended. Keep in mind that this ROM version will not work on AT&T carrier versions or on Sprint, Verizon, and US Cellular devices. Flash the custom ROM at your own peril and good luck!
